| Apartment |
[Sep. 27th, 2008|04:06 pm] |
Some people wanted to see pictures of my apartment, so here you are. I just have the basic furniture now. I don't have the little things such as end-tables, a coffee table, lamps, etc.
I've been working at my first full-time job for almost two weeks now and I am really starting to enjoy my time here. Granted things are slow at work right now, I feel like I'm in the right place and that I will do very well here. My official title is Project Engineer and I am one of 11 key staff that will run this maintenance contract for all the passenger railroads here in Los Angeles. Metrolink, the public entity that runs all of the passenger trains in Los Angeles contracts out a lot of the day-to-day activities that involve running the trains. Even though the city owns the trains, private contractors operate the trains and maintain the tracks. We are the ones repairing the track.
We replace rails, ties, bridges, and do light construction projects. With hundreds of miles of track that needs to be inspected almost daily, this is certainly a large undertaking. Despite the large responsibility, I feel very confident in my new company. Veolia Transporation has been around for over 100 years and they seem to know exactly what needs to be done. They also like to take care of their people, and that I can certainly appreciate. After having some bad experiences with shitty contractors that abuse their employees, this is certainly a different world for me.
Things at home have calmed down a bit. My parents started their divorce off pretty rough and I still think very low of my father, but at least now they have sat down and worked out the finances. Needless to say I am very happy with my new apartment and job and I'm trying not to get involved with drama back at home. I still do things with my sister and my mother all the time and we have all agreed that it is time to move on with our lives.

Well I just moved into my new apartment today and I really am enjoying it. I'm suppose to start my job this monday, but I haven't heard from my boss since thursday. I think I know why.
http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2008/09/13/calif-trains.html
Veolia, the company I am working for, is not the subcontractor mentioned in the article. But we are suppose to be the next new subcontractor starting January the first 2009. I was suppsoe to start my job this week in order to start training for that position. Obviously the last subcontractor hasn't been doing a very good job, and this, sadly, is the bloody thruth. I'm going to have a lot of work on my hands when I first start my job (whenever I start). Even though it won't be our responsibility until January the 1st, I'm sure I'll be getting a lot of this work coming my way before then.
There is a lot to clean up. This is a terrible tragedy.

| O_O |
[Aug. 23rd, 2008|01:17 pm] |
Uh...where to start... good news and bad news
1) My Dad's gone off the deep end. He's a drunk, breaking laws, stealing money, addicted to vicadin, a diabetic heavily drinking, and is so egotistical he thinks he can do whatever he wants and never have to pay the consequences. His business partner is about to sue im and my mother is about to start a big nasty divorce. I'm not one to pick sides, but I know she is the victim here, so our entire side of the family is trying our best to get her through this. My dad is the victim of his own greed and he is about to get screwed from every direction. After years of stress, pain, and suffering on my own behalf because of all of this, I can't say that I am sorry for him.
2) My old computer crashed hardcore. Something to do with it being old and that earthquake jiggling it about. That said, I went on e-bay and bought this awesome computer for a low price (the new musclefox):
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=170244703113
I love it! Just took it nearly a month to get here from when I paid for it.
3) After months of waiting my job came through! I interviewed with Veolia Transportation back in May and they have been my primary pick. The contract was signed this past friday and that means my job is set in stone. I am suppose to start work sept the 15th. I have to move out and find an apartment before then O_O The pay is amazing, I get a work truck (something to do with extra expensive insurance working around railroad tracks that they can't expect me to pay.. so i get a company truck), a blackberry, and full benefits. Very excited! especially since after I pay these bills on my desk... I have $1,000 in my bank account and im about to be flat broke.
So if you've been wondering where I've been and what I've been doing... there you have it.

| Shiza...she's dead! |
[Aug. 1st, 2008|12:45 am] |
After 6.5 years my big frankenstine of a computer is now officially dead. This time the motherboard is cracked and the CPU is on its last leg. My estimate of repairs would be nearly 500 dollars. After years of dumping money into this thing.... I don't think it's worth it. I bought a new computer off of e-bay for a hell of a deal, and the thing is twice as good. I should of done this a lot sooner.
I apologize for not being on the last few days. I've put in a lot of time trying to fix the old computer, and I've had to deal with some problems in school. Things should be working out soon however, and I hope to have a good weekend!
That said, when I strip this computer bare of the good parts I will probably post on here some rediuclously cheap prices. Consider it a computer garage sale. Although I'm not sure if im going to do it yet. |

| You very rarely feel depressed and are usually in a good frame of mind, however high levels of stress can lead to you feeling panic or confusion, but usually you cope with day to day pressures. You like crowds but sometimes feel overwhelmed by them. Sometimes you feel like you need some privacy and time for yourself. You prefer the security and stability brought by conformity to tradition. You do not enjoy confrontation, but you will stand up for yourself or push your point if you feel it is important, however you feel superior to those around you and sometimes tend to be seen as arrogant by other people. You have strong will-power and are able to overcome your reluctance to begin tasks. You are able to stay on track despite distractions.

Now... correct me if I am wrong here... but isn't the 1st law of thermodynamics a big problem here?
Whatever energy you get out of a system, you must first add to that system. So obviously, the amount of energy you get by burning oxyhydrogen you must first ADD to the system via that of a battery when you convert the water to gas. When you light the gases on fire, you are just speeding them along to combine back into a more stable state. The gases release energy, and recombine to form water... the same energy you put into the system BEFORE by using the battery.
So... this might work for water heaters and such, since it allows you to convert electricity to thermal energy.... but this is just a much fancier way (although maybe more efficient) than just using heating coils and running a current through it.
Has anyone done the research on this? Is hooking this system up to run off of electricity more efficient than plugging in some heating coils? I know heating coils have always been known to be very inefficient. You are guaranteed some damn clean water at least. This might be a good way to treat water AFTER you have filtered it (but engineers still would want to use chlorine to treat water anyway because it acts as a residual.... it keeps the water clean even AFTER you treat it. This oxyhrdogen system may give you clean water, but you have nothing to KEEP it clean). I doubt the process works really well when you are running a digital signal through sludge. |

The job fair was cool, but when they finally called me back with an offer, the big giant construction company low-balled me! I know the economy is bad, but the offer just is terrible. I'm not greedy, but even I know when I'm being taken for a ride ;) The guy on the phone wasn't a very good negotiator, and he kept saying things he probably shouldn't of had that gave me the impression that he was fishing for a deal ;)
Anyway.... this has given me some perspective on things. This railroad job.... it is pretty awesome. I really doubt I'm going to find much better. I realize now that my worries were unfounded, and I'll probably end up working there and really enjoying it. I'm going to turn down the other low-ball one, and after calling up my railroad boss to get some more information, he gave me some re-assurance that they are for sure getting the contract and that I will have something for me in august.
Oh well, funny how things work out. I'll just wait and see. |

| Job Fair Tomorrow |
[Jun. 27th, 2008|06:55 pm] |
Despite the terrible economy I think I found a job fair for a company that may very well hire me. They are one of the largest and most respected construction companies in the world, and they have a great company culture (every other friday off, good training programs, organized, friendly, etc).
I'm still hired on with this railroad contractor, but a few things are bothering me. For one, it's taking them forever to give me a "for sure" commitment. Also, the nature of the railroad industry is that of hard work and sweat. They often work saturdays, but they pay rediculously well.
To be honest: money is good, but it's not everything. I'll take the railroad job if there is absolutely nothing else... since something is better than nothing... but tomorrow I'm hoping for the best. I could very well end up with a good offer, good benefits, and a good company that will train me well and will give me some vacation time when needed. |

| I love to BBQ, and I love to cook outside |
[Jun. 2nd, 2008|01:07 am] |
No disrespect to the vegetarians out there, but I can't tell you how much fun I am having learning to cook outside on the BBQ. I'll cook anything from beef to pork to chicken and fish... and I think I'm getting better *pats his stomach* protein is good, yes? :P But seriously, add in some rice peel-off, some veggies, and that's one awesome meal for a lot less you can get from a restaurant. I'm still terrible when it comes to cooking with an oven, but I'm getting better there too.
I'm not sure exactly what has changed, but I am beginning to feel more and more comfortable with life and who I am. Who knows what I might do in the future. |

| My take on the whole oil thing |
[May. 5th, 2008|12:56 am] |
|
This is coming from my civil engineer background:
Let's face it... we are out of oil. The planet just doesn't have enough oil to fuel everyone. And now with china and india in the equation, it just gets worse. What do we have left?
1) hydro: we've tapped all the hydro power we can from our country... it's very clean and efficient, but there are only so many rivers 2) wind: not practical. We would need to cover the country in wind turbines to power the country 3) solar: not practical. Same problem as wind. 4) Nuclear: expensive. There just isn't that much uranium out there. We need something plentiful to fuel the entire world. 5) wave: interesting new idea to use the ocean currents.. but I don't see it as being too practical 6) hrodgen fusion?: no one's been able to do it yet
Where does that leave us?
There is one resource that we still have plenty of... more than anyone could ever DREAM of using... and that resource would be COAL.
Our coal reserves are HUGE. When the price of oil reaches a critical limit, and when our economy is on the verge of total collapse... I garanatee you that we are going to revert back to that dirty resource. We'll be left with two options: use it ..... or lose it. People need power in order to survive and it is now apart of our society. Without power our society will fail, and no amount of environmental pressure will stop that from becoming reality. when people are presented with two options.. protect the environment or have food to EAT..... what do you think they will pick? Fortunately this isn't as bad as it sounds. There are ways to clean coal powerplants using scrubbers that are extremely expensive. The pollution isn't as bad as some would think. Unfortunately this doesn't solve the car problem... and until someone invents an economical electric or solar car, we are in for some big trouble. Diesel trucks are essential to our economy, without them goods produced in our factories would just sit uselessly in their warehouses. This is going to be our biggest problem of them all... how are we EVER going to replace our heavy trucks? construction vehicles? You just can't generate enough horse power for these sort of heavy vehicles on just batteries.
what would I do if I were ruler of the world? I would revert us back to coal as our primary resource and clean it.. no matter the cost. I would then try to use as much "free" clean energy such as hydro, nuclear, and wind. I would then reserve oil only for the absolute necessities... like pavement, plastics, and diesel. I would then make all the cars in the world electric... at the very least.... and make it illegal to drive gas guzzling cars that can easily be replaced with the alternative. |

[May. 3rd, 2008|12:12 am] |
Age of Conan comes out on the 20th, for those that are interested.
www.ageofconan.com
The game has the potential to be really really good.. or really really bad.
I'm finishing up my laster real semester here at USC. This summer I have 6 more weeks of short summer classes, and then I'm done and off for good
Where does that leave me? I have some job opportunities and i'm going to follow them. I may end up working for a railroad company as a project engineer. The hours are long, but the pay is good. The people I would be working with are nice and intelligent and eager to succeed. Either way, I'm going to be living at home with my mother and sister until I save up enough to move out and get my own place. They'll both be happy to have me home again with my Dad now completely gone from our lives. If the house is drama free, I can tolerate it. With my dad out of the picture, it might actually be somewhat pleasant living at home again. I get nice home cooked food and the laundry magically gets cleaned...good? I'm a terrible cook anyway.
In the end I just want a job that I can be happy with... something I can do everyday and enjoy and meet nice people in the process. I don't care about money all that much, but I do want to live at least comfortably enough to support my hobbies. With my dad gone, I will be helping put my sister through college and my mother with whatever she needs(but she is doing just fine, she has enough to get by easily), but I don't mind that in the least. I'm optimistic about my furture and I am sure I will do just fine, but I do admit that I am still anxious. I have no idea what to expect.
Again, I am thankful for my friends, both online and offline, and I thank god each and every day for them. If I didn't have them, I'd be a wreck! I am a happy fox, despite the things that I've been through, and I owe that to the people who care about me. And I will always be there for you too. |

| Rush Limbaugh: Operation Chaos |
[Apr. 14th, 2008|12:08 pm] |
|
lol you
"Operation Chaos," Rush Limbaugh's campaign urging Republicans to vote for Hillary Clinton in Democratic primaries, has been very effective. It doubled Republican turnout in Ohio and Texas, boosting Clinton and prolonging the Democratic race. But in Ohio, it was also almost certainly illegal.
Ohio law requires that citizens genuinely support a political party in order to vote in its primary. To change parties for a primary, a citizen must pledge, under the penalty of election falsification, that she is affiliated with the party and "supports" its principles. Lying on the pledge is a felony, punishable by up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine. The law also stipulates that poll workers have a "duty" to challenge voters who are "not a member of the political party whose ballot the person desires to vote."
In Cuyahoga, Ohio's largest county, 16,000 Republicans switched parties for the primary last month. Several did so in bad faith, without truly changing parties, according to newspaper interviews and Internet postings. The Cuyahoga Board of Elections recently voted to investigate the matter; a report is expected on March 31. Despite the massive crossover voting, however, prosecutions are considered unlikely. A spokesperson for Ohio's Attorney General told Alternet that it is "very hard to prosecute" crossover voting cases, since the crime depends on proving a voter's motive on Election Day.
Limbaugh's motives, however, have been perfectly clear from the start. "I'm asking people to cross over, and if they can stomach it and I know it's a difficult thing to do, vote for Clinton," Limbaugh said before the Ohio primary. The goal, he explained, was to ensure Barack Obama was "bloodied up politically" and to extend the Democratic primary "soap opera." |
